Why Doesn't God Give Me What I Pray for?

St. Dominic in Prayer by El Greco

You are praying for things that will harm your soul.

James 4:3, RSV - You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

Does a good father give a snake to his son when his son needs bread?

You are praying for things that will harm your body.

1 Cor 3:16 - Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 17 If any one destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and that temple you are.

You are not praying in the proper manner.

This means that you are not praying with "attention, reverence, humility, patience, and perseverance" (Baltimore Catechism, #307).

It is not in God's divine plan to give you what you are praying for.

Jer 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Prov 16:9 - A man's mind plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.
Prov 19:21 - Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will be established.

God desires you to grow in patience.

So, He will actually give you what you are praying for later.

Rom 12:12 - Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Rom 8:25 - But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

What other reasons may explain why God does not give us what we pray for?
